PROJECT COUPE
coupe

  1. We bought this car from ebay with a few faults.( hooked on ebay too much right now ! )

  2. Knowing the faults were: A damaged osr wheel arch (too close to a post ) a broken spark plug in the cylinder head and a stone chip in he front windscreen which instead of being repaired quickly had grown into a full crack. The car also had a key scratch on the bonnet.

  3. We went to Luton to collect the car, met a guy called Nigel and sealed he deal.

  4. When the car was home, I instantly removed the cylinder head to inspect for damage. The plug appeared to have seized then sheared off in the cylinder head. The head was then sent to Coventry Engine Boring in Earlsdon where they removed all the spark plugs and debris and helicoiled two of the spark plug threads.

  5. Rebuilt the cylinder head with all new gaskets and cam belt.

  6. With the car now running OK it was time to turn my attention to the other issues. I introduced Lates600.com’s body guy to the poorly wheel arch where he said “that’s a doddle, give me an hour” and sure enough the arch was metal finished and in primer within the said hour.

  7. So now we had prevented any body corrosion problems we sat down and thought what we could do with the paintwork. We already knew it needed a bonnet and osr wheel arch respraying so we thought , as you do, what the heck lets go none standard… Again !

  8. I opted to stay with a standard Tahiti blue basecoat as this saves many hours repainting door shuts and engine bays etc, but what can we add mmmmm… Then it dawned on me, lets buy some more Violet pearl from the House of Kolor range.
  9. Body looks good now for something a little different. A Twin cam Honda 1.6 engine with air con would be nice. Off to the trusty ebay and although it took a while we found a K 93 spec 216gti with air con full history and 11 months mot.We bid and waited patiently, finally the deal came through and for less than £300 I thought we had bought a donor bargain. Collected the car from Slough and took it straight home to strip it down.

  10. Now looking at the whole package I have yet to replace the front screen and the finishing touch was a Brand spanking set of Rover 1.8vvc coupe alloys , again courtesy of ebay, shrouded in an Pirelli P6000’s, lowered slightly 30mm on Apex springs as the 216 coupes do sit a bit too high.
